We have moved to our new premises

We have new premises located in Brunswick Industrial Estate in the former site occupied by Moirs Glazing Contractors, where our volunteers operate our much needed MultiBank services.

Please come and see us, our community table is usually open Monday to Friday from 10am where you can grab a bunch of flowers at reduced prices or a food bag parcel for only £2.50

New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings but new opportunities, new adventures & new connections await.

WE ARE MOVING :)
After a long, arduous and ultimately unsuccessful fight with Newcastle City Council, we have unfortunately been unable to retain our established HQ at The Brunswick Community Centre & we are currently in the process of clearing house. We have been served notice for the end of Feb & we are currently boxing up our offices & supplies.

BUT DO NOT FEAR !!!

We've been searching high & low, spreading the word & sending out smoke signals left and right, We've been lucky enough, with the support of our patrons & clients to receive several offers, all of which were unfortunately unsuitable, until eventually a local resident & client notified us of an available unit just round the corner. We have contacted the owners who we're incredibly accommodating & supportive of our cause/vision, have agree'd terms & are in the process of crossing T's, dotting I's & signing the lease. Once this has been taken care of we will officially announce our NEW ADDRESS!!!!

Some of our services are being paused temporarily but we will be back.....

Unfortunately due to ongoing unresolved issues with our ever helpful Newcastle City Council & there recent decision to increase rates & rent on by 500% , on a small independent charity who exists solely to plug the gaps their municipal services are failing in creating. As such the North Newcastle Food Bank are unfortunately forced to close our doors for the foreseeable future.

Families 1st NE will still be offering our S.E.N support, Pastoral Care & Sign posting services. However Self Care, Mother & Baby & Food Bank services will all remain as a skeleton service strictly for individuals sent via organisational referrals, such as the GP services. We will unfortunately be closing all self referrals & non emergency parcels until a new distribution center is secured. This is a decision we are all absolutely devastated about and regret having to make, however in order to ensure we are able to continue our services again in the future, all efforts must be made to relocate and find a new head quarters.

When Families 1st was initially established, our intention was to help provide S.E.N support for adults & children within the local & broader community, having experienced an absence of such in our own lives. We set out helping with access to state provisions & support through educational reviews . As part of that support we found these issues consistently caused, or were compounded by further difficulties within the household & began a broader holistic approach, providing uniforms, educational tools, household goods, care parcels & eventually food parcels. The response to our appeals for produce & products was overwhelming but amongst the wonderful positive contributions, we also noticed a number of calls & request for support & though our attempts to meet these needs, in 2019 we added Poverty & Mental health to our Charity constitution & the North Newcastle Food Bank was established.

During early 2020, amid crippling lock downs & Covid uncertainty, we were offered the Brunswick Park Centre in Brunswick Village by Newcastle City Council, accepting our new HQ under a Tenancy at will.

Due to the combined impact of an already overwhelming cost of living & the unfolding Covid crisis - demand sky rocketed & in the months & years since we have continued to collect surplus foods from patrons, packing & delivering an estimated 70k+ parcels to families & individuals dealing with needless struggle.

We have always relied almost entirely on a volunteer work force, with our CEO, drivers, Trustee’s & food bank staff, all contributing their time & effort for free.

Since the beginning we have always ensured all money was immediately reinvested directly into providing essential services to our client base, however due to issues under covid conditions we fell into arrears with out rent. Since signing our current tenancy we have met all payments & operational requirements.

However, we currently owe £8731.86 to Newcastle City Council.

We are asking for your support.

In order to fulfill our long term goals & ambitions & continue to support vulnerable people we are asking for donations, as little as £1.00 - £5.00 to help clear the debt.

Yesterday we were overjoyed in welcoming a whole team of incredible & willing volunteer's from Sky - who diligently set about work, helping us clear out our sheds, build a potting nursery, clear our side access & garden areas & a whole host of other much needed jobs around the Brunswick Park Community Centre. We put out coffee's, sandwiches & pastries for everyone but really that doesn't even begin to thank them enough for the generosity. They have been massively helpful & a fantastic support for us as a small independent charity.

From everyone here at Families 1st, we'd like to sent a huge heartfelt thanks to everyone who leant a hand. xxx

Sometimes it's hard to keep faith....

Sometimes it's genuinely hard to put into words just how upsetting and undermining the actions of other individuals can be.

From our inception, having personally experienced a distinct lack of organisational support in times of unnecessary struggle and desperation; from our CEO, to Trustee's, our Volunteer Food Bank workers, drivers & staff- all are united and dedicated to providing the multitude of essential services we offer from our community center headquarters in Brunswick Village..

With being a small and independent charity, one that is almost entirely powered by a volunteer work force,

we have very little financial funding or reserves, as every spare penny is directed into our daily operations.

As such we are almost entirely dependent on support, donations & surplus foods from our neighbors

& locally trading businesses & any additional outgoings or unforeseen costs could potentially have huge

negative implications for us, our essential support services and the community & individuals we serve.

With hundreds of hours a week offered up for free, all funding invested directly into infrastructure & provisions & all hands on deck entirely invested in delivering support that many families & vulnerable individuals entirely depend upon...

....we still find ourselves fighting an uphill battle.

Little to no engagement from our local council/councilors, on going conflict with private entities wanting access to our community hub, sudden rental & rates increases, an appallingly lacking police response to a burglary

we experienced only a few short weeks ago...

We now unbelievably find ourselves victim to a second break in.

Potentially emboldened by the lack of authorities, we suspect the same individuals responsible for the first incident, may have taken it upon themselves to return, this time to vandalise our storage sheds in order to gain access & steal power tools, gardening equipment, pet food, baby & mother supplies, sanitary products & more. Destroying the doors in the process & filling gardening bins with items they then took away with them. With a few notable exceptions, the majority of the items stolen are of little to no individual resale value. They are however an extremely important lifeline to the new families & vulnerable individuals reliant on our provisions.

We have already- as expected, had a good response from our neighbours & regulars

within the Brunswick community, showing concern & support which is as ever hugely appreciated & an integral part of our ongoing ability to maintain our services.

Aside from appealing for any information on the perpetrators, we are also asking for donations in

the form of pet food, sanitary & newborn supplies to replace at least some of the items pilfered.

As always we would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our clients, volunteers, patrons & neighbours for all the continued love & support, without the positive feedback & consistent messages of love & thanks, we would have closed doors & ceased operations within the first 6 months. Without you, there is no us.

AUTISM ROAD TRIP!

Autistic Minds LIVE - Cardiff 2024

Friday 27th September our CEO Amanda Boyce & Trustee Paula Howd made the 13 hour round trip,

from Brunswick Village to the famous Cardiff City Stadium and back for this years;

Autism Live.

In it's 8th consecutive year, since their launch, the Autistic Minds Charity presents live shows, discussions and panels and

provides face to face access to services, resources and provisions that exist to help autistic individuals, their families, and the professionals that support them.

Previously known as The Autism Directory LIVE, this year saw a new and improved Show in Cardiff for 2024.

Visitors were able to talk to exhibitors, listen to seminars on a wide range of subjects relevant to autism,

as well as attend workshops and arrange one-to-one meetings with some of the organisations

that can provide specialist and bespoke support.

If you are an autistic, a family member, or a professional that supports this community,

then the Autistic Minds LIVE shows are for you.

There is no charge to the autism community to access the shows, visitor tickets are entirely free.

Nourish School returns for another round of FREE COOKERY CLASSES

After the success of our first round, we are ecstatic to announce that we will shortly be hosting round 2 of our ever popular

FREE COOKERY CLASSES.

8 weekly lessons, brought to you by the Nourish School- in collaboration with Jamie Oliver's Ministry Of Food.

All ingredients, utilities & utensils are provided, just register your interest HERE & each week you will take home a freshly cooked meal & a recipe card to recreate the dishes at home.

Each week, we dive into a fun new theme that'll keep you inspired and excited to cook. We’re talking everything from cozy soups and fresh breads to delicious pastas, aromatic curries, vibrant stir-fries, and mouthwatering veggie burgers—yum!

This class is for beginner & intermediate experienced cooks but open to all.

You will learn about knife control, meal preparation, kitchen hygiene, heat control, herb & spice pairings & more, in a casual & welcoming environment with experienced teachers & afterwards take home a delicious, nutritious balanced meal.

We've been doing the maths on how many people we've helped & it's humbling

In just the 4 short years of operation, we at The North Newcastle Food Bank have seen our client numbers increase dramatically month on month, with more and more families forced into unnecessary financial difficulties and no end to the corporate profiteering, price gouging & cost of living increases besieging us all.

We are a charity entirely dependent on donations & a volunteer work force, many of which are elderly or have limited mobility & every single hand available is working towards supporting our local & broader community, every hour given freely to help alleviate the needless struggles we see proliferating through out our families, friends & neighbours.

Recently our ability to deliver these vital services has been negatively impacted by reduced donations, increased demand, burglary !, property damage, shop theft and a council seemingly closed off to collaboration, who (despite our existence alleviating their own burden) instead are intent on moving us out of the Community Centre with a view to replacing us with a rumoured Cricket Pavilion & sports ground, that no one within the local community has even asked for and very few will ever benefit from, purely by "coincidence" they have made the decision to triple our rent & up our utility charges.

With this in mind we are forced to consider our organization's operations & the desired impact it is, or isn't having. So we decided for the first time, to lift our nose from the grind stone for just long enough to do some calculations.

Our Data Protection policies & procedures dictate that we destroy contacts within 18 months of being discharged,

however, in the last 18 months;

We have added 1041 individuals

to our clients contacts list.

That is a staggering

658 separate households
(Each receiving 5 bags of food a week, for an average of 4 weeks)

This equates to....

13160 bags of food delivered.

With an average requirement of 3 meals a day per person, for an average of 4 weeks service,

that means 84 meals on average, per client, per term of use.

Using these figures, we estimate we have provided ingredients for an unbelievable..

Nutritious, real food, drinks, additional self care & household cleaning items, pet food & baby formula all delivered to needlessly struggling individuals, all within just the last 18 months.

THIS DOES NOT ACCOUNT FOR..

The hundreds of miles driven weekly in deliveries & donation collections, our Charity Shop , Household Furniture provisions, Special Educational Needs support, 3rd party referrals, Africa bags, homeless support, baby & mother care package, discount Community Meals , beginner cookery classes, children's, new mother & men's mental health groups or the community discount table services that are also simultaneously undertaken by us at The Brunswick Park Centre.

Frankly the attitude, distinct lack of support & active undermining we have received from municipal governing bodies is atrociously insulting.

WITHOUT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY & VOLUNTEER WORK FORCE PROVIDING THE SUPPORT THEY HAVE FAILED TO DELIVER

they would have an even more dire situation to manage.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?

We have huge plans afoot for the next 18 months and beyond, with Youth Club activities like Boxing, Music Production & Language Through Lyricism Classes, Men's Mental Health Support, a return of our Community Cafe & expansion of our Community Meals service (which have recently seen Kitchen refurb funding blocked by the council), Coffee Mornings, Baby & Mother groups & much more but in order to facilitate these plans, we need to maintain our presence & headquarters at the heart of the community.

If those in charge continue to refuse a helping hand, just as we working class communities historically always have, we will come together and resolve the issues ourselves without them, and indeed in spite of them.

WE'VE BEEN BURGLED!!!

Unbelievably, as a small independent, volunteer lead charity- entirely reliant on donations in order to serve our local and broader community, 2 horrifically selfish individuals, a man and woman- spotted by a local community member, took it upon themselves to break and enter our building over the weekend & ransacked our offices in search of cash & valuables.

Police have been down and literally dusted for fingerprints & we are putting out an appeal for information.

Cash, Smart Tablets, Jewelry, Smart Phones, Chainsaw, Pressure Washer & more was stolen. If you hear of anyone selling any of these items, or any whispers of who may have been responsible, please don't hesitate let us know.

WHO ROBS A LOCAL CHARITY?!?!?!?!

We only exist to help those in our community most in need. To think of all the potential targets, that someone would single out an organisation who's sole purpose is to bring about positive change for the most vulnerable around us is truly unsettling.

This could have and in fact, very nearly has destroyed us as an organisation, permanently closing our doors, the impact this has had not on just our oganisation but on the individuals we help, can't be understated.

Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food course is coming to Brunswick Village.

This cookery course takes place once a week on Tuesday mornings for 8 weeks.
Each class last for 1.5 hours and is perfect for beginners and those looking to learn to cook from scratch with healthy ingredients.

Starting on Tuesday 02 Jul 2024, 10:00 – 11:30

In this 8 week course you will learn all the basic cooking skills that you need to prepare fabulous tasty meals. We follow a different theme each week, learning new recipes, new skills and developing knowledge and technique from one week to the next.

Anyone who has visited our wonderful Brunswick Park Centre, down in the heart of the beautiful & historic Brunswick Village, will no doubt already be familiar with out ever popular Community Table, for those more familiar with us, we are introducing new rules to ensure quality & fairness.

Continuing in our efforts to tackle food poverty AND reduce food waste, our Community Table is available to anyone and everyone who can visit us in person, our HQ is wheel chair accessible & you can call ahead on 0191 2170079 should you need any assistance.

We take in donations across the city from individuals & organisations such as M&S, the CoOp, Aldi, Sainsbury's, Greggs & more. Once our clients needs are fulfilled, our freezers & reserves are stocked & we have distributed what we can, rather than disposing of our excess, food donations are made available for all, at just £2.00 per bag .

How does it work?

Fill a standard in store bag for £2.00 or bring your own large/bag for life for £4.00

Simply pick up a basket at the entrance & fill it with your items.

Bread - Up to 3 items per person
Pastries - Up to 4 items per person

Coffee - 1 pack per person
Drinks - Up to 2 items per person
Sauces - Up to 2 items per person
Jars - Up to 2 items per person
Tins - Up to 2 items per person
Salads - Up to 3 per person

Loose veg - Up to 3 of each item per person.
All other miscellaneous items - Up to 2 per person.

Once you have selected your produce simply bring your basket to our till area, where a volunteer will quality check your items before packing them & taking payment.

Freezer bags are available at the manager's discretion, for just £2.00. Dependent on availability, vegetarian options can be provided. Just enquire in person & tell us how many people are in your family.
